[Vision2020] Jon Stewart to Republicans: YouCan't Exploit9/11Anymore

I have seen no indication that the feds were in any way culpable. Perhaps Dave would like to present some evidence where "Federal agencies knowingly lied to the workers (and citizens) about the dangerous toxins involved." No amount of googling has revealed to me any official pronouncement from FEMA, the CDC, the EPA, nor any other federal agency that there were no toxic materials present at the WTC site or that health hazards were no cause for concern. At best any culpability would lay at the feet of NYC municipal authorities for any false assurances. The lawsuits would be most properly directed at them along with, as I have said before, the union pension fund managers and the workmen's compensation carriers. From what I take from your second sentence it would seem that you believe that emotion should carry more weight in the matter then law.

Except for this little bitty thing called Federal Sovereign Immunity. But yes, let's make the 9/11 responders sue the federal government so that they can receive what they should be entitled to in the first place.

I have know idea if that is true or not but, if it is the key word is, as you say, liable. A matter for the courts, not a justification for the passage of a bill granting a special case entitlement.

Because Federal agencies knowingly lied to the workers (and citizens) about the dangerous toxins involved. That makes the federal government liable.

OK, I've read the bill. I've watched the clip. I don't blame these guys for trying to get what they can. After all, they did the job they signed up to do but, I still don't understand why the federal government is being involved. It seems to me that these guys gripe ought to be with their union and their municipal workman's comp carrier. If you're let go because of a work related injury your pension should kick in along with your employers comp. policy. Creating a new taxpayer funded entitlement specifically for this group instead of working through the courts, just like any other working stiff who gets hurt on the job would have to do, seems ill conceived. After all, I've heard no mention of a special bill for workers with asbestosis or mesothelioma, guys who are also ill from work related causes through no fault of their own.

Gary, if you can find it, I recommend watching Jon Stewart's interview with four of the first responders from 9/11. It should answer all of the questions you posted. It's about 5 minutes and is on the same show that Tom mentioned below (I do not know if it's included in his link).

I would like to ask a question. Please do not read more into it then is intended. This is a request for information and nothing more.

Don't the police and firefighters in NYC and the surrounding communities on Statten Island, New York state, as well as New Jersey belong to fairly strong unions for which health care is a negotiated benefit?

Aren't these same first responders also covered by the same workmens compensation packages and disability pensions that cover almost all other state and municipal employees?

Why are additional benefits due these workers beyond what they already have available? What is it that I am missing?
