[WSBARP] Volunteer Opportunity from KCBA VLS

Dear Section Members,

Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) is looking for a volunteer attorney to work with a Vashon resident to prevent him from homelessness. The first step in helping this individual is to obtain a one-year extension of the building permit. Please read the description below and let me know if you would interested in taking on this client through our VLS program. The current volunteer has decided to stop practicing law, and we are searching for someone to help before the permit expires in mid-October.

Client Summary:
Disabled client has been working with a VLS attorney for almost a decade, and then an Associate at his firm for a couple years after the VLS attorney retired, to bring his home up to code to prevent him from becoming homeless. With the help of his attorneys, client was able to acquire several permits, loans, and time extensions on building permits, while making repairs on his home. Client has been able to install a fire sprinkler system, and to bring his septic system and well up to code. However, more work is needed.

The primary focus right now is client's completion of the foundation in accordance with a recent report, and obtaining another one-year extension of the building permit when it expires again in October. Continued contact is helpful to focus client on completing this work. Although the County has been incredibly cooperative and understanding, if it decides not to extend the building permit litigation might be necessary. Using funds being held could help advance the work. The County also recently suggested lining up Professor Smith at SU and the County for another visit to check compliance with Professor Smith's report.

We are looking for a new volunteer to take over the case, because one of the attorneys who has been assisting client retired, and the other is leaving practice to pursue another career. Retired attorney is happy to continue to consult with whomever takes the case over. Volunteer should have land use permitting knowledge and capacity to work with clients who suffer from cognitive disabilities.
