[WSBAPT] EIN Difficulty with IRS - The Rest of the Story

All it takes is an error message because of a name mismatch, a client with a last name of Smith or Williams, and then except for trial and error (i.e. go back through the system trying different versions of the name) the fax requests seem to take ages. Curious that one of the online "services" actually came through and got a number assigned.

I'm sorry to hear of all this trouble.  I apply on line at the above IRS address.  It's free and is completed pdq-same day as I recall.  I don't recall any problems with this.  Perhaps others have used this IRS address as well.  I don't recall if you had trouble with the IRS address or if the paid site were the problem.  I really don't think anyone should have to pay for an EIN number.

Hello fellow Listservers,
I posted a few weeks ago about an estate I was having difficulty with in getting an EIN from the IRS using the online process. Here is the outcome FWIW: Client authorized me to engage one of those paid places from those pop-up ads. It cost $269. Simple online form fills. They ran into the same error code hurdle as me, so it was not "same day" as advertised. We provided follow up authorizations for them to pursue, which were all easy one click & sign items. They "bird dogged" it through the system, and we successfully received the number today. It took 20 days. Whether that is better or worse than I could have done myself, I don't know, but at attorney and paralegal rates, it doesn't take too long to chew through $269.
