[WSBAPT] Joint probate - joint Estate account?

I have opened joint probate and used SS of second to die spouse when doing a joint probate, but ONLY if there are no individually held financial assets (brokerage accounts in particular not held JTWROS) as they have not generally been receptive to Letters with both names and want separate EINs if they hold separate accounts for each spouse.  Seems like this option works best when the reason for a joint probate is that first spouse to die was never removed from real estate.

How's that for "It Depends"?

Listmates,



Husband and wife died within days of each other. If I open a joint probate, can I also open one Estate account?  Will the IRS issue an EIN for the joint estate (if so, would you just use one decedent's social security number), or would each decedent's estate need a separate EIN?

Has anyone opened an estate account after commencing a joint probate, and how was it handled?  One joint account, or two separate accounts?
