Andrew Mackey, a graduate student in the [UI] College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Plant, Soil & Entomological Sciences Department, will present a program on the effects of ventenata infestation on nesting success of tree swallows in CRP. The program will be held on Wednesday, April 16, at 7:30 pm in the Fiske Room of the 1912 Center, Moscow.
Ventenata is a non-native winter annual grass that has invaded agricultural and rangeland systems throughout the Pacific Northwest and causes reductions in plant species diversity. However, little is known about the effects on wildlife and insect populations. This research suggests that ventenata invasion is negatively impacting tree swallow reproduction; however, further research is needed to identify the mechanisms. This program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Palouse Audubon Society.
