" 'Self Preservation' would become the perfect excuse for those in power to do whatever they want, locking things down until we have no freedoms left." --Paul. R.

Ahh, yes, the old slippery slope argument never fails to win over the always skeptical of everything crowd. Your argument works equally well with seat belts, Paul.

First, they just strap you in for self preservation, then they use it to keep you in your seat, then write you tickets to raise money for the Policeman's Ball, then they hide behind billboards and shoot invisible lasers out of a gun to track how fast you are trying to get to work and home. Is everything, from seat belts to killing terrorists overseas an excuse for a government power grab, in your world Paul?

Paul, the government isn't after more power, they already have it all. They aren't trying to steal your freedoms. You don't have any.

"Self Preservation" would become the perfect excuse for those in power to do whatever they want, locking things down until we have no freedoms left.  We would be safe from everything except for the government itself.  In theory, anyway.  In practice, we'd have more and more "security theater" that is designed to make you feel safe, but does little to actually help.  In the meantime, we'll have no freedoms left.

I'd rather we just manned the hell up and stopped whimpering like frightened puppies whenever someone mentions the word "terrorist".

Paul
