[Vision2020] PR - Farmers Market Location Adjustments andSurveys

I like the idea a lot. That part of main is dangerous for pedestrians, the traffic congestion is ridiculous, and most of the parking is taken by people who work downtown and rush out to play vehicle roulette every few hours to avoid a ticket. In the winter it is a dang disaster waiting to happen, and any driver with sense just doesn't travel that two blocks. Parking a block away would make little difference to ANYONE...a central "pedestrian only" few blocks makes sense. Merchants downtown aren't really "walk ins"; they are a destination for folks who want specific things. people will walk 100 yards to get what they want...

The city has accommodated the ADA quite sufficiently, Mr. Arnold.

If you'll take the time to browse the parking spaces surrounding Farmers' Market, you will find a considerable amount of additional disabled parking made available during Farmers' Market.

Concerning "all road access to legally operating business". Since WHEN is that a requirement??

Are you aware of how many U.S. cities have pedestrian-only shopping districts where motor vehicles are not permitted?

The suggestion was brought up, in response to an article in today's (July 5th) Daily News, that (perhaps) Main Street (between Third and Fifth Streets) should be permanently barred from motor vehicles and, thus, creating a pedestrian-only quad. I like it.

What is more scary is that the Moscow City Council has greatly expanded its authority.

I wonder where in the State Constitution it gives the City Council its authority to be able to block off all road access to legally operating businesses during normal business hours. And I guess also it now has the ability to ignore the American Disabilities Act requiring a certain number of parking spaces and for access to businesses.

First, they ban pets, then people with disabilities from downtown. Who is next?

As ABSOLUTELY pleasing as this modification to Farmers' Market may feel, for it to be "carved in stone" it will require a vote by . . . dare I say . . . Moscow's City Council.

    Scary, huh?

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

      PRESS RELEASE
Market makes adjustment to layout of temporary Main Street location – surveys participants

July 5, 2012 (Moscow, Idaho) – The Moscow Farmers Market one day extension to the temporary move will bring several adjustments to the layout in response to input received from businesses, vendors, and customers. Adjustments include extending the market south to Sixth Street to allow more space for vendors, while keeping the 4th Street area clear to allow for better access and additional parking.

The Moscow Farmers Market surveys are on line on the City’s website at http://www.ci.moscow.id.us/ and are available for those interested in providing feedback on the two locations the Jackson Street parking lot and Main Street. Additionally, the City of Moscow will have hardcopies of the surveys available at the Market on July 7.

The Moscow Arts Commission, the early organizer and longtime supporter of the Moscow Farmers Market, is also hosting a public feedback session at 5:30 on July 10 in City Hall Council Chambers. Anyone with input regarding the Moscow Farmers Market location is invited to attend and share their feedback which will be compiled and reported to the City Council.

For more information regarding the temporary move, survey, and public feedback session please contact Jen Pfiffner, Assistant to the City Supervisor at 208.883.7123.
