But Tom, this is Moscow, the Liberal capital of the Idaho Panhandle…  You don't honestly think that the local elites would sully themselves by actually publicly supporting the members of our local National Guard unit---and their families---while they were off on a deployment and in harm's way?  Or by welcoming them home safe?

Why, that might indicate some modicum of---ick---support for what two presidents have determined was necessary U.S. military action in Afghanistan and Iraq to protect the country against terrorism!  (Not that I---surprise---agree with either deployment, but that shouldn't make any difference, because the guys didn't start either war, or ASK to be sent off to Southwest Asia, and should still be honored for their service to their country.)

You certainly wouldn't expect the Moscow City Council and the Mayor to take time out of their busy schedules to say or do something nice for the "mindless myrmidons"  who volunteered to join the local 126th Engineers, would you?

Alas, I fear your expectations were doomed to be dashed.
