Driver finds puppy trapped in car transmission

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A woman rushing to see her husband in the emergency
room was forced to stop her car because of a strange noise.

"The puppy was actually stuck," Darlene Broome said about an 8-week-old
lab that she found under the hood of her car. "I've heard of cats doing
this before -- getting up in motors of vehicles -- but never a puppy or
dog."

It all started when Broome's husband woke up in pain.

"My husband was having chest pains at 5:30 a.m.," she said.

The Lancaster, S.C., couple called an ambulance. Broome followed
frantically behind for 30 miles.

"I kept hearing this whining like an animal noise coming from around my
car," she said.

Anxious to get to the hospital, Broome stopped.

"Opened the hood and there was a small, black, fuzzy puppy's head with his
little white eyes showing," Broome said.

The puppy was wedged in the motor on top of the transmission.

"I'm thinking, 'I need to get to the hospital as quickly as possible and I
can't leave this little puppy stuck in my car,'" Broome said.

So, she flagged down help. Matt Baxley, a mechanic on his way to work,
stopped.

"The lady was broke down in the middle of the road and I stopped to help
her," he said.

He knew the minute he saw the dog he would need help.

"She was definitely stuck. We had to take a good bit off the car to get
the dog out," Baxley said.

But he didn't have any tools to tear into Broome's car.

"It was about to be at the point where she had to decide if she wanted to
save the dog, or she wanted her car to make it on to the hospital," Baxley
said. "Luckily, those guys showed up with tools and we got her out of
there without breaking the car."

The puppy's belly was burned, but Broome had to get to her husband. So,
Baxley rushed the dog to the vet. After speeding a few days there, she is
fine. Baxley's friend adopted the dog.

"It was a miracle they helped me, got the puppy and my husband's fine,"
Broome said.
