It is every bit as bad. Why does it have to be a group? To insult a family is just as bad. Why do you think it is less offensive to insult an individual or a family?
Not to Sunil on the basketball team- You misunderstood me, probably due to my poor phrasing. I did not mean to imply that the team was leftist. There political views are unknown. at least to me.
