City of Moscow Participates in Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch
Run

 

Moscow, Idaho, January 20, 2009 - The City of Moscow Police Department
is proud to participate in the final leg of the 2009 Special Olympics
World Winter Games Law Enforcement Torch Run(r). The final leg ceremony
in Moscow, Idaho will be held in the Moscow High School Auditorium,
January 30 at 2:45 p.m.  The torch will arrive in Idaho Tuesday, January
29 and will make its way to Boise by February 6 where the flame will be
welcomed and received in Idaho at the start of the 2009 Special Olympics
World Winter Games.

 

The run will begin at 2:45 p.m. at the University of Idaho Commons. The
run will head east on University Street, north on Ash Street, east on
Idaho Street, north on Elm Street, East on W. 6th Street, north on Main
Street then east on 3rd Street to the Moscow High School.  There will be
71 Law Enforcement Officers from the United States, 7 from Canada, and
18 from other countries.  The group also includes 10 Special Olympians.


 

The public is invited to attend the arrival of the torch ceremony at
Moscow High School.  At the ceremony Mayor Nancy Chaney will speak and
the Vandal Band and Moscow High School Band will perform the National
Anthem after a presentation of the flag is made by a color guard.  

 

The Law Enforcement Torch Run(r) for Special Olympics is an
international movement where members of the law enforcement community
initiate and implement Torch Runs and events to raise funds and
awareness for Special Olympics. The Law Enforcement Torch Run(r) Final
Leg for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games is made up of an
international team of 142 members, which includes 95 Law Enforcement
Officer runners, 10 Special Olympics athletes and support personnel, who
will serve as "Guardians of the Flame" as they welcome and receive the
"Flame of Hope" in Idaho. 

 

To symbolize the significant contribution of law enforcement and the
inclusion of Special Olympics athletes in this unified Torch Run, the
Final Leg Team will conduct extensive runs and ceremonies in all of the
Host Town Program communities and in many other towns throughout Idaho
to heighten awareness of Special Olympics and the World Games. The Final
Leg Team will safely deliver the "Flame of Hope" to the 2009 Special
Olympics World Winter Games Opening Ceremony in Nampa, Idaho on February
7th. 

 

Mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run(r) Final Leg:

*	Create awareness and excitement for Special Olympics and the
World Winter Games
*	Encourage support and attendance of the World Winter Games
*	Proudly represent Law Enforcement and Torch Run programs from
around the world as a symbol of their deep commitment to the athletes of
Special Olympics
