The problem with some(not all) of those on the left is that they use charges of racism against those on the right when ever they disagree with the view point of an African-American who is on the left. This is usually an attempt is squash dissent as people do not want to run the risk of being labeled racist. This same approach could also be used on those that disagree with Clarance Thomas. There are legitimate racist statements that can be criticized. but far too often it is merely a disagreement in viewpoint.
