*Fall 10-Day Enrollment Snapshot Shows Overall Upward Momentum*

MOSCOW, Idaho – Academic quality leads the way in the University of Idaho's
incoming freshman class, which includes nearly double the number of National
Merit Scholars than a year ago. On the 10th day of classes for fall semester
2008, the university counts 3,733 total new students, an increase of 11.6
percent over a year ago. Overall statewide enrollment at the University of
Idaho registered a 1.3 percent increase over the previous fall, to 11,791.
The new student numbers reflect the third consecutive year of increases for
the university.

"Students of high academic quality continue to choose the University of
Idaho," said Jeanne Christiansen, vice provost for academic affairs. "We
have an atmosphere of excellence in learning that encourages intellectual
growth, and that is attractive to prospective and current students."

Some 42 percent of new freshman have a high school grade point average of
3.5 or higher, up 6.5 percent, and some 53 percent have an average ACT
composite test score of 23.47 or above, up 2 percent. The number of first
time freshmen at the University of Idaho is up 4.7 percent compared to a
year ago; 36 percent of new freshman are first-generation college students,
an increase of 7 percent from a year ago.

The University of Idaho currently has 31 new National Merit Finalists, of
whom 26 are National Merit Scholars. The university now boasts a total of 65
students from the National Merit Program, ranking the institution second in
the Northwest among public universities.

National Merit Scholar Emily Brookhart found many attractive qualities in
the University of Idaho, including her scholarship. The Idaho Falls resident
graduated from Bonneville High School.

"I am quite impressed with the university," Brookhart said. "The resources
available to me – both academic and non-academic – have astounded me. My
classes are fascinating and my professors encourage contact."

She already is involved with the university's Honors Program and is engaged
in the freshman core curriculum.

"My integrated science course – Color, Chemistry, and Art – forces me to
pull knowledge and skills from multiple different departments, like science,
history and art," Brookhart related. "And my core discovery class – War and
Our World – has incredible instructors, incredible reading and incredible
discussion. I'm simply excited every time I attend that class."

Overall, the university continues to attract a diverse student body,
including a 9.8 percent increase in the number of African American students,
a 5.1 percent increase in the number of American Indian students and a 7.1
percent increase in the number of Hispanic students.

The University of Idaho also has an increase in the number of new graduate
students, to 566, which is up 23.9 percent over last year.

For consistent reporting purposes, universities tend to use fall enrollment
numbers as the official totals for the current academic year.

The enrollment numbers for the University of Idaho include full-time and
part-time students at the university, whose main campus in Moscow features a
residential living and learning experience.

The university has centers in Boise and Twin Falls, Coeur d'Alene and Idaho
Falls. Fall enrollment at Boise is 342, up 7.9 percent from a year ago; Twin
Falls has 52 students, up 26.8 percent; at Coeur d'Alene, enrollment is 397,
down 13.3 percent; and at Idaho Falls, enrollment is 333, up 22.9 percent.
Enrollment on the Moscow campus is 10,667, up 1.1 percent from a year ago.
