<div><span id="lblHeadline" style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold"><b>Strong Academics Define University of Idaho's New Freshman Class </b></span><br><br><span id="lblArticle">Sept. 9, 2008<br><br><i>Fall 10-Day Enrollment Snapshot Shows Overall Upward Momentum</i><br>
<br>MOSCOW, Idaho – Academic quality leads the way in the University of Idaho's incoming freshman class, which includes nearly double the number of National Merit Scholars than a year ago. On the 10th day of classes for fall semester 2008, the university counts 3,733 total new students, an increase of 11.6 percent over a year ago. Overall statewide enrollment at the University of Idaho registered a 1.3 percent increase over the previous fall, to 11,791. The new student numbers reflect the third consecutive year of increases for the university.<br>
<br>"Students of high academic quality continue to choose the University of Idaho," said Jeanne Christiansen, vice provost for academic affairs. "We have an atmosphere of excellence in learning that encourages intellectual growth, and that is attractive to prospective and current students." <br>
<br>Some 42 percent of new freshman have a high school grade point average of 3.5 or higher, up 6.5 percent, and some 53 percent have an average ACT composite test score of 23.47 or above, up 2 percent. The number of first time freshmen at the University of Idaho is up 4.7 percent compared to a year ago; 36 percent of new freshman are first-generation college students, an increase of 7 percent from a year ago.<br>
<br>The University of Idaho currently has 31 new National Merit Finalists, of whom 26 are National Merit Scholars. The university now boasts a total of 65 students from the National Merit Program, ranking the institution second in the Northwest among public universities.<br>
<br>National Merit Scholar Emily Brookhart found many attractive qualities in the University of Idaho, including her scholarship. The Idaho Falls resident graduated from Bonneville High School. <br><br>"I am quite impressed with the university," Brookhart said. "The resources available to me – both academic and non-academic – have astounded me. My classes are fascinating and my professors encourage contact." <br>
<br>She already is involved with the university's Honors Program and is engaged in the freshman core curriculum.<br><br>"My integrated science course – Color, Chemistry, and Art – forces me to pull knowledge and skills from multiple different departments, like science, history and art," Brookhart related. "And my core discovery class – War and Our World – has incredible instructors, incredible reading and incredible discussion. I'm simply excited every time I attend that class."<br>
<br>Overall, the university continues to attract a diverse student body, including a 9.8 percent increase in the number of African American students, a 5.1 percent increase in the number of American Indian students and a 7.1 percent increase in the number of Hispanic students. <br>
<br>The University of Idaho also has an increase in the number of new graduate students, to 566, which is up 23.9 percent over last year. <br><br>For consistent reporting purposes, universities tend to use fall enrollment numbers as the official totals for the current academic year. <br>
<br>The enrollment numbers for the University of Idaho include full-time and part-time students at the university, whose main campus in Moscow features a residential living and learning experience. <br><br>The university has centers in Boise and Twin Falls, Coeur d'Alene and Idaho Falls. Fall enrollment at Boise is 342, up 7.9 percent from a year ago; Twin Falls has 52 students, up 26.8 percent; at Coeur d'Alene, enrollment is 397, down 13.3 percent; and at Idaho Falls, enrollment is 333, up 22.9 percent. Enrollment on the Moscow campus is 10,667, up 1.1 percent from a year ago. <br>
