No, actually, the Pope has spoken "ex cathedra" -- in his position of supposed infallibility -- on the issue of sexual relations, asserting that sex is first a procreative activity and only secondarily a pleasurable one.  The phrasing used is something along the lines of "every act of copulation must be open to the possibility of conception," which is a clear prohibition of any form of birth control other than abstinence during fertile periods.  Further, the Church has specifically condemned methods such as the IUD that it considers abortifacients, preventing the implantation of the fertilized egg into the uterine lining.  

The prohibition against contraception in any form was one of the things I knew I could not abide by as a Catholic.  As a Protestant, I'm quite happy to have two wonderful sons.  I don't care if they grow up with a conviction against birth control or not; I just want them to grow up completely devoted to Christ, not to anyone else -- and especially not to a celibate man who believes he is the literal living heir to the apostolic throne of Simon Peter.  

And yes, I wanted very much, when I was in grade school, to be a nun.  But then I hit adolescence, and it occurred to me that my being a nun would make it terribly uncomfortable if I was to run off with David

Keely,     You are confused. The Power of Infallibility was not ever used in the declaration against birth control. It is just a church policy.      If the Pope stated that through divine revelation he knows that birth control is wrong, and declared infallibility on the subject praying with the Church, I would have no choice but to accept it as God's will. Otherwise, it is just another numbered Cannon Law.      Second, even if it was the word of God, doesn't mean I would follow it anymore than I do anything else he asks. I am a deeply flawed follower of Christ.      Finally, I never admitted to being a "Faithful" Catholic, just a Catholic. If the Kennedy's and the Mob can claim to be Catholic, so can I. God is probably more flexible, but the Catholic church claims its origin to the Apostle Peter, the "rock" on whom Christ built his church, and what Yahweh likely allows is often prohibited by the Pope.  Catholics may do well to abide by Spirit-guided conscience, but
 the individual communicant has to decide if she can reconcile being a faithful Christian with complete adherence to Papal authority.  I couldn't, which is why I left the Roman Catholic Church 27 years ago.  I know many, many sincere Christians who are practicing Roman Catholics, but I believed then, and do now, that I could not be.

  Ellen,     Most Catholics in the United States believe in birth control. Second, where did you hear that there is no "wiggle" room in having to believe everything the Pope says and still be Catholic?     I know of no Catholics that believe everything the Catholic Church preaches,
 including nuns and priests? The only thing Catholics are required to believe is the Dogma of the Church.      Best Regards,     Donovan

 Trail,     Has anyone suggested teaching people living in third world countries that most of their starvation and malnutrition problems would go away if they would not be popping out 8 babies a piece?
