U.S. service members who died while supporting combat operations in Iraq, 
confirmed by the Defense Department from May 23, 2008 through May 29, 2008:

Marine Cpl. Christian S. Cotner, 20, of Waterbury, Connecticut; assigned 
to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st 
Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Jason F. Dene, 37, of Castleton, Vermont; assigned to 
the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd 
Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Army Spc. Justin R. Mixon, 22, of Bogalusa, Louisiana; assigned to the 1st 
Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany. 

May 23, 2008 – May 29, 2008
Killed: 3; wounded in action: 31

March 19, 2003 – May 29, 2008 
Killed: 4,072; wounded in action: 30,143

The Following U.S. service members died while supporting combat operations 
in Afghanistan, confirmed by the Defense Department from May 23, 2008 
through May 29, 2008:  

Army Spc. Justin L. Buxbaum, 23, of South Portland, Maine; assigned to the 
62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood Texas.

Army Spc. James M. Finley, 21, of Lebanon, Missouri; assigned to the 173rd 
Special Troops Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, 
Germany. 

Army Spc. Christopher Gathercole, 21, of Santa Rosa, California; assigned 
to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Army Spc. David L. Leimbach, 38, of Taylors, South Carolina; assigned to 
the 1st Battalion, 118th Infantry, South Carolina Army National Guard, 
Fountain Inn, S.C., and attached to the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry 
(Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition), New York Army 
National Guard.

Army Sgt. 1st Class David Nunez, 27, of Los Angeles, California; assigned 
to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Army Pvt. Andrew J. Shields, 19, of Battleground, Washington; assigned to 
the 173rd Special Troops Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 
Bamberg, Germany.

Army Pfc. Chad M. Trimble, 29, of West Covina, California; was assigned to 
the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st 
Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
