Donovan, speaking of factions, says:
"Garfield was suppose to split the 10,000s of appointments he made
between the two factions. He didn't, he gave preference to his faction.
He made a guy mad that didn't get an appointment he was promised, and he
shot Garfield in a train station so his VP, in his faction, would make
the appointments for his faction."
Guiteau was little more than a well known nutjob, and was promised
nothing. After he shot Garfield and surrendered to authorities, he
said: "I am a <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalwart_%28politics%29>
Stalwart of the Stalwarts . . .
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester_A._Arthur> Arthur is President
now!!" Then, of course, you can get into the whole discussion about
Stalwarts and Half-Breeds, but that's neither here nor there.
This statement briefly led to suspicions that Arthur or his faction had
put Guiteau up to the crime. (like many Veeps, Arthur was chosen for
political advantage, to placate his faction, rather than for skills or
loyalty to his running-mate.) So the blame was wholly on Guiteau and
his delusions of grandeur.
And it sure is fun to say "factions".
