The Earth Policy Institute has made Lester R. Brown's new book "Plan B 2.0"
available online, free, in its entirety, as far as I can tell.  I downloaded
a chapter in PDF format, and a window popped up asking the reader to either
join their list serve or make a donation, but the chapter downloaded in
totality.  This book documents starkly why Garrett Clevenger's comments
above are true.  The current consumer lifestyle of the average US citizen is
linked to the destruction of ecosystems on a global scale.  And China and
India, with over 2 billion in population, to some extent modeling their
economic growth on US patterns, are accelerating this damage.  This is not a
theory, or speculation.  It is a fact:
