Check out the technology associated with the SR71 aircraft.  Back in the 
mid- to late-80s it was the US's primary recon aircraft.  At that time it 
was capable of photographing a golf ball on the ground from an altitude of 
50,000 feet and tell you what brand it was.

The SR71 has since been shelved as it is now considered obsolte.
