I agree with J and Tom on this. I've opposed this war from the beginning,
and agree with Bill's first and third points entirely. But while I agree
with Bill that troops are the instrument of the policy, I disagree with the
second half of point number 2.
I think those of us opposed to the war should avoid actions that alienate
others from joining us. Poll numbers show how opposition is spreading. I
am concerned that the Bush Administration intends to widen the war by
attacking Iran, and if we the people are going to have any voice in stopping
this, we need to be together. To force people away by protesting against
either the troops or those wishing to join the military simply alienates
people and doesn't accomplish anything.
When I was an undergrad at Davis there was a traveling evangelist who came
to campus every spring. His style was to stand on the quad calling men
'fornicators' and women 'whores.' He'd end up with a crowd around him,
egging him on; it was quite a show, and maybe he thought we deserved to know
we were going to hell because we didn't believe as he did.
I don't think he ever converted anyone.
Setting aside everything else, if the recruiters aren't in those offices at
the mall anymore, it strikes me as pointless to protest there. It makes me
think of Spinal Tap, lost on the way to the stage, yelling "Hello
Cleveland." Why give someone like Dale, who on the one hand has taken
positions against the war, yet instinctively attacks its vocal opponents,
the chance to lampoon you?
