[Vision2020] Mitchell report on steroid use in MLB - Scandalous!

Do not forget that the Babe toiled as a pitcher for the first five years of his career, and compiled a 94-46 record, notably, about half the wins that Roger Clemens compiled in his 13 years with the Red Sox. The Babe held the longest scoreless innings streak in the World Series for most of a century. The combination of his pitching and hitting prowess makes him the greatest player of all time, in my opinion, though I loved Willie Mays more, since I could see him play when I was growing up.
Hank certainly earned the career home run honors and was a great great man. His home runs per at bat stats are well behind the Babe, though. Over the course of their careers, the Babe hit a home run every 11.8 at bats, while Hammering Hank Aaron hit one every 16.4 at bats.

Well...you make some good points Tom. Hank Aaron is absolutely a class act. I was thinking more in terms of the Babe's accomplishments relative to his era where he was by himself hitting more home runs than the entire teams were hitting. And as for the stories about his heavy partying and womanizing during the roaring 1920s (again relative to his era), I first heard about them when I was in my late teens and my initial thoughts were pretty much "Babe Ruth was the greatest baseball player of all time!". If we're talking about the big picture of class act, great role model, great ambassador for the game, no steroids, no debauchery, most legitimate career home runs, etc., then I agree that Hank takes the cake.

I beg to differ with you, Mr. Dredge.
The greatest home run hitter for all time was, is, and will always be “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron. He was not a womanizer. He never used steroids and never abused alcohol. He is what baseball should be about, setting an example for our children. Hank Aaron did just that with grace, dignity, and the respect of every fan of the game and every player that ever wore a jersey from Boston to San Diego and Miami to Seattle .
You see, Mr. Dredge, baseball is more than scoring runs. It is the heart and attitude of the people.
As James Earl Jones said in his role as the famous 60's writer Terrance Mann in the movie “Field of Dreams”: "The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.”

Hot dogs, beer, and women. It was heaven on earth for the Babe / the Bambino / the Sultan of Swat / the King of Swing / the Colossus of Clout / the Prince of Power / the greatest home run hitter the history of the world / the best there was then and the best there ever will be.

Hey, they totally busted Roger Clemens.
Oh yeah, that was AFTER he left the Red Sox and resurrected his career on steroids with the Yankees.
To get a feel for what steroids could do for you, you don't just need to look at Barry Bonds increasing hat size and home run numbers, look at Clemens. He won 192 games for the Red Sox from 1984-1996, while losing 111. But his last four years with the Red Sox as his body gave out, 1993-96, he won 11, 9, 10 and 10, while losing 14, 7, 5 and 13. He was basically a .500 pitcher for those four years at 40-39. He goes to Toronto and is immediately 21-7, and then with the Yanks is 20-6, 14-10, 13-8, 20-3, 13-6, 17-9, followed by 18-4 in Houston in 2004, 13-8, and 7-6, before returning to the Yanks and going 7-6 this year.
Based on the reports of his extensive "juicing" with the Yankees and what he did his last four years w/ the Red Sox before discovering the juice, it would appear to me that the last decade of his statistics are subject to extreme discounting by the Hall of Fame voters.

> The Mitchell report, which reported widespread used of steroids in Major League Baseball, was released today and it is scandalous. George Mitchell is a director for the Boston Red Sox and not one marquee player from the Sox was listed in the report and yet there are many big name Yankee players listed. There should be an investigation into this discrepancy.
