you are making assumptions that fit your prejudices.  unfortunately, they do
not fit with reality.
first, remember that capital punishment is much more expensive than life
incarceration (count all the automatic appeals, free defense lawyers, etc)
second, why do you think sociopathic killers like Duncan would be deterred
by capital punishment?  I think it is fair to say that Duncan was determined
to rape/kill despite his knowledge that those were capital offenses.  Most
capital crimes are crimes of passion where punishment is not relevant.
third, if capital punishment is so wonderful a deterrent, why are the US
crime rate and incarceration rates so much larger than those rates in
countries without capital punishment (like those in Europe)?
