RE: Pursuit and Vehicle Roll-over

On 5/2/2006 at 03:15, a Latah County Sheriff deputy observed a red pickup
swerving and weaving in and out of its lane of travel on Highway 8 near Mill
Road. The deputy turned on his overhead lights to stop the vehicle for the
traffic offense near the intersection of Hwy 8 and Carmichael Road. At
first, the vehicle slowed down and started to pull over, but it then
accelerated and continued westbound toward Moscow. By the time the vehicle
reached the west-most edge of the cemetery, it had accelerated to
approximately 65 mph, with the deputy still attempting to stop the pickup.
The deputy advised Latah County Dispatch that the vehicle's speed had
reached about 85 mph by the time it had reached the intersection of Hwy 8
and Blaine Street in Moscow. With his lights and siren still activated, the
deputy slowed his speed. The deputy observed the pickup attempt to swerve
around another vehicle then lose control and skid sideways across the Hwy 8
and Hwy 95 intersection. He saw the pickup roll over and come to rest on
its wheels. He immediately told Dispatch to send ambulance response to the
location. The deputy went to the vehicle and identified the driver, a 13
year-old female, and the passenger, a 17 year-old female. Both girls were
listed as runaways from the North Idaho Children's Home in Lewiston, Idaho.
Both girls were transported to Gritman Medical Center and treated for minor
injuries sustained in the crash. After treatment, the 13 year-old was taken
into custody for Felony Eluding, I.C. 49-1404(1), and the 17 year-old was
taken to the Sheriff's Office for questioning. Both girls will be released
back to the custody of the North Idaho Children's Home. The Moscow Police
Department investigated the crash.

Due to the ages of the suspects in this case, their names will not be
released by this office.
