[Vision2020] interesting...

Chas and Melynda both responded eloquently to Ed and Dick, and I doubt that
I can improve on anything either of them have said. Melynda hit the nail on
the head with her analysis of scapegoating and immigration; Chas deftly
pointed out that Ed's pride in being a white guy is silly, given that he had
nothing to do with his race, ethnicity, or the nation in which he was born.

So I'll just add this for Ed and Dick, who seem terribly upset that people
would ever think them racist for defending or taking pride in their "racial
heritage":

There are so many other things that thinking people may find objectionable
about you that I'm puzzled why the suggestion of racism would bother you.
Still, would it help you to understand that no one, I think, would object to
your being fascinated by your Scottish heritage, interested in researching
the history of your Polish ancestors, enamored of your Finnish forefathers,
or taken by all things Welsh. No one would condemn you for being a member
of the Sons of Italy, Daughters of Norway, or Stepchildren of Serbia. I
tend to like Gaelic things -- my name is Gaelic, I've heard, for "she who
stands by the sea" -- and someday I would like to go to Ireland or Poland to
see my ancestral homelands. Again -- no racism involved there at all.

But "white heritage" means "to the exclusion of black," and also to the
exclusion of or derision of other, presumably darker-skinned, races. I'll
say it again: In contemporary culture, "white" is not a "race," it's a code
name for "not Black, not Jewish, not American Indian, not Mexican," etc.,
and those who proclaim pride in their being white are proclaiming pride in
being "not Black," not in being Irish, Swedish, or whatever. Take pride, or
interest, or devote yourself to collecting the appropriate postage stamps
representing what you ARE and not what you're not, and you'll likely not be
called a racist. If that really matters to you, which I suspect it doesn't.

Ed's comments about ugly, masculine women who couldn't possibly find a man
in the real world are so despicable and hateful as to defy belief, although
they do confirm my theory that he is a virtual goldmine of asininity, and
Vision 2020 readers have struck the motherlode.

I don't care what your real name is or isn't, I don't care whether you
are bisexual, homosexual, heterosexual, or asexual. I don't judge
people on the inconsequentials. However, I do judge people based on
statements like this one:

"My gaydar simply scans for the most repulsive clipped-hair,
masculine-looking and sounding woman imaginable--one that could never,
in her life, catch a real man…"

If I had children who were still of school age, and I knew that a
teacher had uttered those ugly words in a public place, I would do my
damnedest to ensure that that teacher was a teacher no more. Those
aren't words that a role-model for children speaks.

I think I am getting to recognize your profile. I'm guessing that you
are one of those inexplicable people who are "proud" of their white
heritage. This blog entry leads me to that conclusion:

"And what really gets my dander flowing is that every white person is
so afraid of defending their heritage because someone will call them a
racist."

I'm proud for having two feet, Ed. I'm especially proud that I have
one left foot and one right foot. Think of all of the work that I did
as I busy little fetus ensuring my proper footedness. So I understand
why you would defend your white heritage. It has nothing to do with
racism, and everything to do with all of that prenatal energy you
expended in working on your whiteness.

Thank you for sharing. It has been both disturbing and enlightening,
though I can't say in equal parts. I'll leave it to you to deduce
whether the former or the latter dominates.
