The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends March 24, 2006
Dear Friends,
The 48th annual Idaho Academy of Science Meeting and Symposium is underway
on our campus, and we're very pleased to host this group that so effectively
promotes all science disciplines and science education in the state. This
year's meeting addresses "Science Across the Boundaries," and featured
speakers are Mary Ruckelshaus, a research biologist with NOAA Fisheries in
Seattle who leads a team that is developing biologically-based delisting
criteria for salmonids listed under the Endangered Species Act, and Richard
Mack, professor in the School of Biological Sciences at Washington State
University who has devoted his research to the ecology of invasive species.
Next week, the Borah Symposium brings more thought-provoking opportunities
to the campus community. "Resource Wars" will look at the potential for
global conflict over the world's limited natural resources. The keynote
address, "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Succeed or Fail," will be
presented by author and scientist Jared Diamond of UCLA. The presentation is
Wednesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. in the SUB Ballroom. Other speakers March
27-28 include Michael T. Klare, the Five College Professor of Peace and
World Security Studies; Aaron Wolf of Oregon State University who studies
the interaction between water science and water policy; and Severn
Cullis-Suzuki, an environmental and social justice activist.
I'm proud of the University of Idaho's commitment to provide opportunities
for the discussion of these important state, regional and world issues.
The open discussion of ideas puts us all closer to the inspiration that is
necessary to create a better community and a better world.
Tim White
President
Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:
~ The choreography of University of Idaho sophomore Celadon Wood has been
featured center stage. Her work was one of 11 dances featured in the Gala
Performance at the American College Dance Festival Northwest Conference in
Laramie, Wyo., last week. Wood's choreography was chosen from among 40
dances submitted from 10 states, and also was selected runner-up for the
national competition of American College Dance Festival of America, to be
held at the Kennedy Center May 16-18.
~ The Ada County Alumni Chapter hosted a Silver and Gold reception Tuesday
to honor three notable alumni. Nate Calvin '93 and Jesse Walters '60, '63
received the University of Idaho Silver and Gold Award. Kathy Supko '75 was
presented the Jim Lyle Award for her long-term dedication and service to the
University.
~ Bernice Bacharach '42 was the third woman to graduate from the University
of Idaho College of Law. Her degree from the University lead her through a
legal career that spanned 50 years, and she became one of the most prominent
attorneys in the state of Washington. Her belief in the importance of legal
education is the cornerstone of the two endowments she has established for
the benefit of the College of Law. Her recent generous gift of $100,000
brings the endowment totals to more than $450,000. Funds from the endowments
will be used for student scholarship, and building improvements and
upgrades.
Bacharach's gift truly will make a difference and is one more step for the
College toward becoming the "nation's best small state law school."
