The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends July 28, 2006

Dear Friends,

I am pleased that Jack Morris has accepted appointment as dean of the
College of Business and Economics following a national search. Jack is a
longtime University of Idaho business professor and the current associate
dean of the College of Business and Economics. He will lead an
intellectually energized college of more than 1,400 student, 50 faculty and
staff, and successful alumni who all continue to reaffirm and strengthen the
University's legacy of producing leaders, thinkers and global citizens.

Jack replaces Byron Dangerfield, who is retiring following a 28-year career
at the University of Idaho. Byron came to the University in 1980, and has
served as professor, department chair, and for the last
16 years, as dean. He has helped to shape an innovative college through the
implementation of the Integrated Business Curriculum and leadership in the
use of technology in the classroom. Byron also led the effort to build the
college's permanent home, the J. A. Albertson Building.

There are two important "dashboard indicators" about the strength of our CBE
programs-a push-pull scenario. First, student interest is high and growing
for the College's curricular options. Secondly, the business community in
Idaho and around the nation is keenly interested in employing graduates from
this program as they have come to appreciate graduates who have an
integrated and comprehensive understanding of doing business in a global
economy.

Tim White
President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

Campus presentations today:

The Microelectronics Research and Communication Institute (MRCI) hosted 11
undergraduates from around the U.S. as part of the University's National
Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates grant. A
culminating poster presentation takes place today from 9:30 a.m.
to 4 p.m. in the SUB Silver Room. Some projects include "Axon Growth
Comparison of Regenerating Ganglion Cells after Surgical vs. Chemical
Lesions," "The Effects of Mutation in the Sonic Hedgehog Gene on the
Developing Zebrafish Retina" and "A New Hypothesis for the Physiology of
Neural Synchronization in Visual Cortex."

Nineteen high school students from Idaho and Washington participating in the
pre-college enrichment U-DOC program this summer will present their medical
research findings today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Commons Summit Room.
The U-DOC program provides academic experiences for talented regional high
school students who have an expressed interest in medicine and health
careers, but may come from a disadvantaged background. Some of the research
topics include the risk factors and prevention strategies for African
Americans with type II diabetes, the role of telomeres in cancer treatment,
and prevention and treatment of color blindness.
U-DOC is supported through a grant from the University of Washington and the
U.S. Public Health Service.

Idaho Falls-area Vandals will gather Aug. 1 at the Pinecrest Golf Course
clubhouse for an event sponsored by the Alumni Association and Idaho Falls
Vandal Boosters. A chip and putt clinic begins at 5:30 p.m. and a social
starts at 6. A buffet dinner is at 6:45. KIFI news anchor and alumna Karole
Honas and KIFI sports anchor Adam McIllich will be masters of ceremonies.
Many items will be offered at both silent and live auctions.
Tickets are $20. Contact the Vandal Scholarship Fund office in Boise at
(208) 364-4027 for more information or to inquire about tickets.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Take care, Moscow (you, too, Vandals).
