The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends July 7, 2006
Dear Friends,
Here is an update on the students who came to the University of Idaho last
fall as a result of Hurricane Katrina. We had a total of 10 students enroll
at the University after receiving more than 50 inquiries. Of the 10, seven
were from Idaho, and one each from Oregon, Montana and Washington. We expect
four of the students to be permanent transfers to Idaho. Of the other six,
one has graduated and five will return to their original schools.
The cost of the program in cash expenditures was $66,500. The Alumni Office
provided $10,000 to help fund the scholarships. We also were able to waive
out-of-state tuition and provide other scholarship funds available for the
2005-06 school year.
All the students have expressed their appreciation for the opportunity we
provided them, and we all benefited from their presence at the University of
Idaho.
Tim White
President
Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:
Aquaculture researcher Ronald Hardy has been honored with the Golden
Sturgeon Award from the Idaho Aquaculture Association at its annual meeting
in Twin Falls.
The annual award recognizes outstanding contributors to Idaho's aquaculture
industry. Hardy received the award for his support of the industry in
dealing with critical issues and development of responsive resources for
industry to use with their clients. Issues he has tackled include: pollution
from farms; use of dietary supplements identical to pigments in natural prey
to add color to trout fillets; and efforts to replace the use of marine
protein and oil with sustainable alternatives from grains and oilseeds.
Idaho Gem, the world's first equine clone, finished first in his debut on
the California fair race circuit June 21 at the San Joaquin Fair. "Idaho Gem
blew them away," according to the official race summary. The victory puts
the University of Idaho mule clone at two wins and a third in three starts.
Idaho Gem won his race with a time of 20.724 seconds over a 350-yard course,
2-1/2 lengths ahead of the second-place finisher.
The Ada County Chapter of Vandal Boosters presented a $50,000 check to the
Department of Athletics in support of the Vandal Scholarship Fund (VSF) and
athletic scholarships. Funds for the gift were raised during the annual Ada
County Vandal Scramble held May 20 at Banbury Golf Club in Eagle.
The 19-member Ada County Board of Directors was led this past fiscal year by
President Hart Gilchrist, Vice President Pete McDonald, Secretary Nick
Crawford and Treasurer Bob Lange. The board hosts a number of events
throughout the year, and also participates in the annual fund drive to raise
money for the VSF. They raised more than $95,000 through special events last
fiscal year, and with private and corporate gifts, the Ada County members
gifted more than $620,000 to VSF.

Take care, Moscow (you, too, Vandals).
