 Insofar as idioms, double modals, and culture-speak: I caught myself saying
"usta-could" the other day, as in "I usta-could play the piano very well,
but am out of practice."  I will not apologize for this because although I
was born and raised in Latah County by two English sorts, my Mom's family is
rural farm-folk from the South and their speech patterns somewhat pervade my
informal speaking and writing from time to time (and I do consider email
informal writing).
