Its often assumed that a Jewish presence did not exist n the ME prior to
the establishment of Israel or earlier prior to the beginning of Zionism
under Hertzl. I have an Exhibition coming to Moscow and opening on 27 April
on the History of the Iraqi Jewish community and its 2500 year long history
that I hope will enlighten people on some of the history of the region.
Jews were as oppressed under Islamic rule as they were under European
regimes. They were not allowed a serious voice in government, denied access
to certain professions, charged extra taxes, denied equal protection under
the law and subject to the same sorts of pogroms that happened in Christian
countries.
In the 1930's, when Zionism was through legal immigration and land purchase,
Jews were set upon and riots in support of National Socialism were common.
Hebron, now part of the West Bank, had been a continuously Jewish inhabited
community of in excess of 3000 years, yet in 1929 the 800 person community
was wiped out by its neighbors in a fury of blood letting and ethnic
cleansing. The Palestinian, Iraqi and Syrian Communities sided with Hitler
during WW II.
Baghdad was once 25% Jewish, with hundreds of thousands of Jews making their
homes there. Today, the total Jewish Community of Iraq is 100 people.
Yemen once had over a hundred thousand Yemeni Jews and the Jewish population
there is now Zero. The Syrian town of Aleppo had a Jewish Community with a
history 3000 years old, yet Arabs burned down the Great Synagogue there in
1947 and passed laws making Jewish ownership of property illegal while at
the same time killing Jews yet refusing to let them leave Syria legally.
The Jewish population of Iran was 100,000 prior to 1979 and the Islamic
Revolution. The Jewish Population of Iran today is less than 10,000, as
Jews were denied basic human and civil rights under the Islamic laws. In
1994, the Islamic Government published "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion"
as a work of history, rather than as the fraud that Tsarist propaganda piece
was and of course now the Government there is planning on a conference for
Holocaust Denial. They, like the Syrians, will not allow Jews to legally
leave Iran, regardless of their official persecution of Jews who do stay.
Just as Germans did in the 1930's, most Islamics will tell you that they
have nothing against Jews personally, while screaming about a world Zionist
conspiracy in the very next breath. The Jews in their own countries were
driven out, killed, robbed and tortured, but somehow they can pass this off
as a simple reaction to all the 'bad' things done in Israel, even in cases
where the attacks on Jews happened prior to the creation of a Jewish State.
It should be noted that the bulk of Israel's population today is composed of
Jews whose families come previously from other Middle Eastern Countries.
Iran's President says in his statements, which are actually just as common
among Sunni's as well, that the 'Jews' should go back to Europe and leave
Islamic lands like Palestine. How about all of the Jews who are from Arab
lands? Do any of those Arab and Islamic governments intend to ever
compensate them for the theft of lands and businesses, for the deaths and
the tortures and lose of homes and property that were inflicted on them?
They are concerned about Palestinian rights to land, yet refuse to
acknowledge any right of Jews to property in the Islamic world that was held
for longer than any Arab held lands in Israel.
I do think that some sort of solution that has a Palestinian state in it is
the only solution, however, Jerusalem is the Capital of Israel and must stay
part of Israel. If I declared that Mecca was a holy site for Jews and
therefore should be declared an International City, Saudi Arabia would
rightly tell me to take a hike. If Eskimos declared that Rome was sacred to
them, I seriously doubt that the Vatican or the Italian government will
agree to turn Rome over to UN control. Turkey is not making Istanbul an
International City to please the Greek Orthodox, so why exactly should
Israel give up its capital because its the third most holy site for
Moslems?
