Pat, et al,
Thank you for your observations.
Sam Goody's is in the act of closing in the PEM this week. The super kitsch
store in the PEM went out about three weeks ago. There are now several
vacancies. There is also a rumor that one of the major PEM anchors is
seriously considering closing.
Perhaps those better informed can answer the following:
With the vacancy rate at the PEM going up, what is the economic incentive to
build a new mall (twice as big as the PEM) just west of the state line?
Should the problems of the PEM present a possible objection to this new
mall?
Did the possible advent of one or more WalMart Super Stores in the immediate
area play any part of the decision to close any of the now defunct or
defuncting ("F" for coining) PEM outlets? Are some of these businesses
rolling over and playing dead in fear of the pending WalMart(s)?
A few months ago WalMart announced that it will experiment with carrying
some upscale items in some of its stores.

If either or both of the proposed area WalMart Super Stores are part of this
experiment, what effect will this have on area businesses? In particular,
the downtown areas of Moscow and Pullman?
