I would say the American public in its judgment of Bush, is not being
historically ignorant, but perceptive in its assessment of the damage he
has done and continues to refuse to recognize. It is true, of course, that
war time presidents have been roundly criticized, but often justly so.
James K. Polk comes to mind and others even more recent than he. I think
Pat is correct that we may well be repeating history, but if we are, its
more closely akin to the history of the Vietnam era than World War II.
