Hi Carl,

In part, you wrote:

Well, Carl, I dunno know . . . that might not be necessary at all!

I'd like to thank those who've brought up the Trinity Festival discussion
Of course, I have lots of comments about it <g>, but I'll confine myself to
just one aspect right now, and if possible, I'd be interested in the
business community's take.

I am rather puzzled by the locale for the Trinity Festival. Does anyone
know why it's being held at the UI? Yes, I think we all know the UI is in
dire financial straights, but have they no shame? Will they stop at nothing
in their quest for the almighty dollar? Do they just flatly not care a bit
about the harm that will come to the UI community from being painted by this
odious brush? Seems to me like someone at the UI dropped the ball in a big
way by not educating Tim White about this history of the UI and
recruitment/diversity/human rights issues in the not distant past due to our
perceived proximity to Richard Butler. I guess there's no institutional
memory of the time when the UI -- and Moscow -- made the national news due
to a "lynching" that was really a suicide, and all the institutional
resources that were poured into dispelling that image. All of that hard
work -- poof -- gone by selling out to the likes of the Trinity Festival &
their warped ideas.

Maybe I'm naive, but it seems to me the UI is directly competing with the
private sector in renting out the Kibbie Dome and providing lodging and meal
services. If this so-called festival were to benefit students or was a
function/mission of the University, I could understand the campus location.
But, the fact of the matter is that this festival has nothing whatsoever to
do with the UI, its mission, or goals. Indeed, *making money* off hate
speech seems to be the antithesis of the UI's mission and is certainly a
HUGE slap in the fact to the taxpayers.

In any case, does the fact that the UI is providing the facility, the
lodging, and the meals for this non-student event harm local businesses
which would benefit if the festival weren't on campus?

And, how does the UI's decision square with the following?
"Consistent with education's primary responsibilities of teaching, research,
and public service, the institutions, under the governance of the State
Board of Education and Board of Regents of the University of Idaho (Board),
have and will continue to provide facilities and services for educational
purposes. Such services and facilities, when provided, should be related to
the mission of the institution and not directly competitive with services
and facilities reasonably available from the private sector. The
institutions’ provision of services and facilities should be educationally
related."

While I completely agree with you regarding Mr. Wilson's and friends
competence as historians, and the lack of credible scholarship involved, I
can't agree with an attempt to somehow keep it out of Moscow. The right to
assemble is too crucial. There are events that occur in our town that I
support, that those on the right scoff at and ridicule. The recent
anti-inauguration rally at Friendship Square is an example. Were potshots
taken at the rally and its participants? Yes. Was any attempt made to
prevent it? No. I hate to trot out a shopworn phrase, but "slippery slope"

comes to mind. Criticize the theme, make fair comment regarding the
questionable acumen of those involved. I will. I'll also lay in any
supplies I might need from downtown, avoid the area, and, in a few days,
it'll be over.
