No, I call it liberal paraphrasing. The wording, more ethically,
should have appeared like this:
"Tom... has bent over backwards... for the University and...
students." --Donovan Arnold ASUI Senator.
Personally, I wouldn't have quibbled over Tom's version (assuming that
I was a Tom Trail supporter), as his meaning matches yours, EXCEPT for
where he includes the words "I support Tom Trail." Arguably, this
could have been divined from the context, but the integrity of the
action is still troubling. That would have chafed me, as well.
Unless, of course, I had made that statement elsewhere, and he (or,
more probably, his PR person) had merely grafted it for more appealing
propinquity.
This seems to have generated quite a lot of fire for having started
with so little kindling.
