I appreciate Jim's point. As a matter of fact, my BA in Journalism
(University of Arizona '82) perhaps even equips me to offer a further
analysis; not surprisingly, it equips me for not much else!:

I place enormous value on formal education and am grateful for what I
received from public schools. In addition, and more importantly, I had
parents who instilled in me a love of reading and a talent for writing. The
most important component, though, of mine and anyone else's education is
that deceptively simple, almost quaint word -- "curiosity," that insatiable
thirst to always know something new and different.

I want political leaders who are moral and intelligent, but without that
spark of wonder that fuels the engine of intellectual and creative pursuit,
I would hope they would please stay out of government and content themselves
with merely being pleasant, helpful, and law-abiding. I'm sure I could find
a measure of respect, even affection, for George W. Bush if he were merely
my next-door neighbor, and I'd find much less cause for lament for the next
three years.

All,
We live in a complex world. Only through education and sufficient experience
can one even hope to achieve an understanding of a reasonable number of the
world's complexities. (Without understanding, decision making must logically
be based on superstitition, emotion, or groupthink.) That in mind, I wonder
if there is a resource that attempts to list state and federal politicians
along with their education and experience. I want to know how many of our
politicians have mastered at least some complex subject? How many graduated
in a subject that can be mastered while partying every evening? How many
have no higher education at all? Does anybody have any ideas where such a
resource might exist?

It is time we valued education.Perhaps we should start with our
leadership......
