|I share Sean's concern about demeaning language--in particular the decision
| to call members of Christ Church "culties."  As any sociologist of emerging
| and new religions will tell you (at length!), the word "cult" has no
| particular meaning--it's simply a pejorative that's used to describe a
| religion which someone else disapproves of.

| I'm no conservative--nor a defender of the theology or practices of Christ
| Church and its members.  I believe that there have been indefensible hiring
| practices and decisionmaking at the Chamber, and that those decisions have
| adversely affected our whole town, not just members of the Chamber.

| The discussion has got to remain nuanced, civil, and thoughtful if we're
| going to address the ongoing question of how all of us can peacefully
| co-exist in Moscow.  I think that question is increasingly important.  The
| pressure keeps rising, and we're not doing very much to bridge the gaps.
