[Vision2020] Response to Kimmell: Part I, DiscriminatoryHiring/Contracting Practices

I share Sean's concern about demeaning language--in particular the decision
to call members of Christ Church "culties." As any sociologist of emerging
and new religions will tell you (at length!), the word "cult" has no
particular meaning--it's simply a pejorative that's used to describe a
religion which someone else disapproves of.

I'm no conservative--nor a defender of the theology or practices of Christ
Church and its members. I believe that there have been indefensible hiring
practices and decisionmaking at the Chamber, and that those decisions have
adversely affected our whole town, not just members of the Chamber.

The discussion has got to remain nuanced, civil, and thoughtful if we're
going to address the ongoing question of how all of us can peacefully
co-exist in Moscow. I think that question is increasingly important. The
pressure keeps rising, and we're not doing very much to bridge the gaps.
