Perhaps a partial solution to this problem will come from research and
technology.
For example, a fast multi-purpose pre-contribution screening blood test might
lessen the need for some wide-based screening now based on behavioral factors or
geographical happen-stance.
At present, however, some of the behavioral factors used in screening do not
make a lot of sense.
Suppose A, a man, has multi-intrusive, serum exchanging sex with B, another man.
B then has multi-intrusive, serum exchanging sex with C, D, E, ... etc., all
women.
Although B would be prevented from the current rules from giving blood due to a
possible AIDS risk, C, D, E, .... who have almost the same risk would be allowed
to give blood.
The problem C, D, E, ... face is this: They most likely do not know where B's
various appendages have been and what the risks to themselves and others are.
Even the very chaste can be at risk since further complicating the above
scenario is the fact that AIDS and many other diseases which put the blood
supply at risk can be transmitted without sexual contact and without the
infected persons knowledge or suspicion. Despite these problems, sexual contact
continues to be an important element used to pre-screen potential blood donors.
Perhaps someone on the list with knowledge of the latest research and technology
can enlighten us on progress in this area and how it might affect future blood
donor pre-screening procedures.
