[Vision2020] Moscow Community Blood Drive

Joan, et al,

I too, gave blood two or three times a year until they changed the requirements
a few years ago. At that time much to my embarrassment in a small town I was
loudly informed that because I was domiciled in Africa for about two years in
the mid-60's (where various diseases probably few on the Palouse have ever heard
of abound), I am suspect now and evermore as a blood donor even though I never
suffered from Sheep Liver Fluke. Madura Foot, Schistosomiasis, etc as far as I
know.

I do give blood though. I sneak into Gritmann in the dead of night and hook
myself up to an unsuspecting, comatose, unguarded patient and pass the delights
of my African experience into their life-stream.

A caveat on the blood drive (which I think is great idea and a community
obligation): some of us who would love to donate, and who used to donate on a
regular basis, are now barred by the Red Cross from offering up a pint. Gay men
are barred, even if they're proven HIV negative. People like me, who lived in
the United Kingdom for more than a year during the mid-eighties Mad Cow
epidemic, are barred. If you've had a tattoo, you're barred from donating for
up to a year. Before you go down and offer up a vein, check with the Red Cross
to make sure that you're wanted. I can tell you from bitter experience that
it's very demoralizing to show up all civic-minded only to be turned away.

I have a comparatively rare blood type, AB+, and would love to give, but I
can't. Of course that doesn't stop me from selling my plasma up in Spokane when
I need a few bucks to buy a bottle of Ripple . . .

PS: If I actually had Mad Cow disease, that would explain quite a lot,
wouldn't it?

I read in the Spokesman this weekend (plus or minus 7days) about the
shortage in the blood supply in many states right now. Some have only
a 1-2 day supply and have to borrow blood from other states, if those
    states have sufficient reserves.

Also, accd. to the the Inland Northwest Blood Center website, UI is
having a blood drive on the 29-30th at 875 Line street in the 'upper
canvass area' (is this the Student Rec Center?) so if you can't make
it the 25th you can show up there.

So how about a challenge to all Vision2020 members to put your
'sensitive inner elbow' where your mouth is and donate some blood?

scared of needles and a fainter,
    Debbie
