I apologize to the list for passing on suspect information. The Economis=
t lost their brilliant long-time copy editor a few years back and are no =
longer the model of probity they once were. (So much, too, for their per=
sistently hopeful take on the situation in Iraq?) From now on, I'll stic=
k to the National Enquirer. Bat-Boy and Nostradamus have never let me do=
wn.      =20

FYI, I believe that attempts to numerically measure intelligence are fool=
ish in general and often racist and/or classist in particular. Depending=
on which IQ test you take -- the Stanford-Binet, the Weschler, or the tr=
ivia quiz to get on Jeopardy -- one person's scores can vary significantl=
y, which suggests that what these tests measure is not intelligence but r=
ather the ability to take the test. If IQ were truly quantifiable, then =
an individual's scores would not vary. But we know that they do. The We=
schler flattered me with a diagnosis of "very superior" intelligence, but=
the Stanford-Binet said that like the kids from Lake Wobegon I was just =
"above average." Not too long ago, I took an IQ test that purported to b=
e balanced in terms of race, class, and linguistic background, i.e., it d=
idn't artificially favor native speakers of English. That one put me way=
down the scale at borderline George Bush. I tried not to take it person=
ally, choosing instead to blame my poor performance on a hangover. So wh=
at if I hadn't been drinking? Any old excuse to avoid copping to my midd=
le class white privilege. =20
In my nerdy magnet high school, the true mark of genius was being able to=
solve Rubik's Cube. This coming June will mark twenty years since my gr=
aduation and I still can't complete more than one side. My only consolat=
ion is that unlike the Rubik's whiz who sat behind me in 12th grade Engli=
sh, I do know how to blow my nose. And comb my hair. And not clean my e=
ars in public with a pencil. I definitely have "very superior" hygiene. =
    =20
I'm all for emotional intelligence (wouldn't that be EI, Pat, rather than=
EQ?) but I would suggest that Bill Clinton had that in abundance. Witho=
ut it, how could he have been so successful at "feeling our pain?"
Joan Opyr/Auntie Establishment =20
PS: Howard Gardner wrote the book (literally) on multiple intelligences. =
He came up with something like seven or eight, most of which escape me a=
t the moment. I know they included musical ability and interpersonal ski=
lls, both invaluable assets traditionally ignored by standard IQ tests. =
You needn't understand calculus to be a genius. Who knows? Perhaps Geor=
ge Bush missed his true calling as a contestant on American Idol.Get more=
