I believe the golf program was accepted by the (then) university
administration before going through the usual program approval process. It
was passed by the Curriculum Committee and Faculty Council ex post facto on
the basis that it required no new courses or facilities. It's one of 12
accredited programs (by the PGA) in the country, the only one in the PNW. At
the time it was approved, they anticipated an eventual enrollment of 200.
One of my previous Alma Maters (Ohio State) had a popular major in "Turf
Grass Management". Golf is big business in this country-- on Spring Break, I
heard that Arizona has over 320 golf courses but ranks only 19th in the
nation.

I can't answer this question, but let me add my incredulity to Rose and
Saundra's.
Clearly, the UI is attempting a local monopoly on the Bad Plan curriculum.
They've got some stiff competition from You-Know-Who, but President Shifty
O'Badplan has appointed Dean Bucko Shortsighted and Vice Provost Gloria S.
Incoherency to head a Hatchet Committee, and they're way ahead in creating a
brand new major, Dismantling Science.
They're not quite there yet. Outsourcing, my friends, outsourcing. The
UI could save a fortune by simply dismissing the faculty, digging a big hole
in Boise, and asking students to throw their money on top of the $18 million
already in it. Hey, wait . . .
Quick, someone! Call Peterson's and Newsweek. UI has the most successful
marketing department in the Pacific Northwest.
