Free Showing of "Gandhi," Saturday, Febr. 28, 7 p.m. Kenworthy Theater,
Moscow=20

The Academy Award winning film "Gandhi," the story of the
nonviolent movement for Indian independence, will be shown free =
Saturday,
Febr. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Kenworthy Theater in Moscow.=20

Gandhi is considered one of the twentieth century's most influential
spiritual and political leaders for the power of his principles and his
practice of nonviolent resistance to oppression. Gandhi's philosophy and
approach to nonviolent social and political injustices have been
incorporated into nonviolent struggles for social and political change
throughout the world, including the American Civil Rights Movement.

The showing of the film precedes the opening of this year's University =
of
Idaho Borah Symposium, March 1-3, which focuses on nonviolent conflict =
in
political struggles. =20

"Gandhi" won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, =
Best
Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. The film is an epic
portrayal of the struggle led by Mohandas Gandhi to liberate India from
British colonial rule. The film was 20 years in the making and stars Ben
Kingsley as Gandhi, Candice Bergen as photographer Margaret Burke White,
Martin Sheen, John Gielgud, and Trevor Howard.=20

Beginning with Gandhi's early struggles as a British-trained
attorney for civil rights in South Africa, the film shows how Gandhi's
principles and nonviolent tactics evolved over time, and how his power
embodied the hopes of freedom for people of the Asian Subcontinent that =
is
now India and Pakistan.

The film portrays the infamous massacre at Amristar, where British =
opened
fire on 15,000 unarmed men, women and children, and the dramatic March =
to
the Sea, when thousands of Indians walked with Gandhi to the ocean to =
claim
its salt for the people of India. Scenes of Gandhi's imprisonments and =
fasts
to end civil violence among factions, Indian independence and the =
partition
of Pakistan, and Gandhi's assassination by an Indian nationalist in 1948 =
are
vivid and moving.

The film is presented jointly by the UI American Studies honors and film
theory classes, and is sponsored by the University of Idaho Office of
Diversity and Human Rights, Honors Program, and Borah Symposium =
Committee,
and community sponsors Palouse Peace Coalition and the Latah County =
Human
Rights Task Force.=20

Seating is free, but limited.=20
