Visionaries:
Okay, I'm a little slow. Somehow in my mind the abrupt closing of the UI=20
Press and the 48 hour notice given to clean up and clear out to Press employ=
ees=20
didn't initially seem to be linked the generous efficiency survey *donated*=20=
by=20
IKON to the University of Idaho. No doubt there is money to be made for the=
=20
*lucky* company holding the winning bid, and even I recognized the old boy=20
network in action, but I didn't tie the two together until I stumbled upon:=20=
=20
"Valley Forge, Pennsylvania=E2=80=94February 23, 2001=E2=80=94IKON Office So=
lutions (NYSE:=20
IKN) executives will join leading experts on e-commerce and on-demand printi=
ng=20
at this year's On Demand Digital Printing & Publishing Strategy Conference a=
nd=20
Exposition....
Butch Porcaro, Vice President of Operations for Digital Express 2000, who=20
will speak March 1 on "Using Online Services for Document, Publishing, Copyi=
ng=20
and Binding;"=20
Among the solutions to be shown will be IKON's Digital Express 2000=20
e-services offering for Web-enabled on-demand printing and document manageme=
nt, and a=20
series of scalable, digital printing solutions that address ease-of-entry as=
=20
well as high-volume capabilities for color and black and white digital print=
ing."

Well, tan my britches (or bitches if you prefer). Does the following Rose=20
smell-a-ratitis scenario have the same ring of truth to you as it does to me=
?
Suppose UI administrators decide to outsource printing and duplicating, mail=
=20
service, etc.; suppose IKON wins the bid; suppose President White, as a=20
gesture of his serious concern about UI needing an academic press, decides t=
o=20
resurrect the UI Press imprint. What a happy coincidence that IKON stands re=
ady to=20
move beyond the world of UI conference pamphlets, Safety Manuals and class=20
packets.
Some may dismiss email this as delusional projection, and I hope they are=20
right. But somehow, I don't think so. Once again, I remind readers to read=
my=20
signature line - (courtesy of a man who hasn't lost his integrity - Tom Trai=
l).
Rose Huskey
Once you lose integrity everything else is easy.
