Tom,
Your ERA dates are quite a bit off.
The ERA was passed by Congress in 1972 not 1985.
It was given 7 years for ratification and that deadline was then extended and it didn't get the required state approval.
So, Nixon was president when Congress passed it, then Ford took over until Carter took the oath in '77.
Reagan didn't assume office until '81--two years after the ERA missed its first deadline for ratification and 7 years after Congressional passage.
So, you might possibly blame Ronnie for not supporting the ERA at the very end when he actually was pres. but it looks to me as if there is plenty for blame to go around.
All the '70's presidents could be blamed for lack of leadership.
I'd probably point towards the poster boy for ineffectual leadership Jimmy Carter more than I would Ronnie. After all, Jimmy was pres. before the ERA looked like a lost cause.

Check your recent history, Mr. Douglas.

President Reagan claimed to have been a strong supporter for equal rights for
women.

In 1985 (I think it was '85), the House and Senate passed the ERA in spite of
Reagan's attempts to quash it. Thirty-six of the needed thirty-eight states
ratified it. Result: No Amendment.

Now. Do you remember. Or should I provide you links?
