The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) has embarked on an
unprecedented effort to determine outdoor recreation needs in Idaho. We
would very much appreciate it if you would help us spread the word about
public meetings in your area. 

The process we are following is described below.

Public Involvement Meetings

IDPR is conducting a series of 44 public meetings on outdoor recreation
needs this spring and summer, one in every county in the state. The goal of
each meeting is to find out what kind of recreation opportunities people
need in and near their local communities.

Recreation Provider Focus Groups

In addition to the county-by-county meetings, the Outdoor Recreation Data
Center (ORDC) will conduct regional focus group sessions with city, state
and federal recreation providers. Similar to the public meetings, but more
in-depth, these two-hour sessions help us learn about needs from the
perspective of those providing local and regional outdoor recreation
opportunities.

Statewide, County-by-County Survey

The information gathered during the public involvement meetings and the
recreation provider focus groups will help the Data Center develop
county-specific questionnaires. Beginning in June, the ORDC will send
surveys on outdoor recreation needs and issues to randomly selected
recreationists statewide.  Though the bulk of the questions will be
identical, each survey will be customized by county. We will send enough
surveys to residents in each county to assure statistically valid results.

The results of this effort will help us determine how to rank outdoor
recreation grant requests from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The
analysis of the county-by-county surveys will give us better insight into
specific local needs which may be addressed by all of our grants programs,
help us spot trends in outdoor recreation and help identify outdoor
recreation issues statewide.

The public meetings in North Idaho, which start promptly at 7 pm and finish
at 9 pm, are:
