What positions did the incumbents running for the City Council take on
the following issues:
1. The new gym by the Aquatic Center
2. The public nudity ordinance

Was Ms. Hamlett the council member that spoke at the anti- "nudity
ordinance" gathering in Freiendship Square a while back? I think she did,
but I am not certain. If so, she certainly has my vote.

I agree with Ms. Huskey. If there are DN reporters subscribed to this list,
could they present their side of this argument?

For a fact, are there any DN reporters subscribed to this list?

  Dear Visionaries,
It is rare that I find myself in total agreement with our friends from
Christ Church. This is one of those occasions. While there seems to be
some confusion about when or where the anonymous flyers appeared, the notion
that the DN relied on an unsigned document as a factual story basis is very
disturbing. I know that some reporters from the DN read this list- serv -
would any on them care to share their side of the story with us? If not,
their credibility, it seems to me, is in a much more vulnerable position
that Doug Wilson's. At least, to his credit, regardless of how unpopular or
(in my opinion, deliberately inflammatory) he is never ashamed or reluctant
to sign his name.
  Best,
  Rose Huskey

Rose & Tom (and Visionaries):=20

Let's be very clear on this matter.=20
a.. Back on 9 August 2003, Nathan Alford wrote in the Daily News that =
the Editors were interested in correcting every error in the Daily News =
(see "Accuracy Matters").=20
b.. The Daily News decided to run a front-page story based on a =
deliberately inflammatory, misleading, and incorrect anonymous flier.
a.. The headline article on Saturday read: "Sanchez, director of =
diversity and human rights at the UI, decided to research the Christ =
Church-sponsored conference in February that features the authors =
discussing history and slavery."
b.. The History Conference isn't about, nor has it ever been about =
slavery. See: =
http://www.christkirk.com/HistoryConferences/9thHistoryConference/Topics.=
asp
c.. You just have to wonder how much research Sanchez really did =
when he didn't even know what the topic of the conference was about!
c.. Yesterday (15 Oct 2003), the Daily News issued the following =
correction: "Local pastor Douglas Wilson and author J. Steven Wilkins, =
who were mentioned in the article "Slavery Revisited" in the weekend =
edition of the Daily News, will be in attendance at the ninth annual =
History Conference at the University of Idaho in February. The =
conference, sponsored by Credenda/ Agenda, will cover the topics of =
revolution and modernity. Incomplete information appeared in the Daily =
News."
a.. In fact, not only was the information incomplete, the =
information was factually incorrect.=20
b.. The Editors are refusing to retract the deliberately incorrect =
information.=20
c.. Why? Because they will have egg on their faces for creating the =
news as opposed to reporting it?=20
d.. We've seen these tactics from them in the past. See Ralph =
Nielson's letter about "Lynching in Friendship Square". That's news? =
That's not inflammatory?=20
Whether or not any DN reporters are subscribed to this list, I am =
copying the Editor (Alford) and Managing Editor (McClure).=20

Let's just say that I'd love to see how this helps their circulation. =
It's all about the bottom line anyway, isn't it? To hell with "truth" =
and "accuracy".=20

I would hope that Vision2020 would be interested in truth in reporting =
and not just in slander and baiting for revenue's sake.=20

Best,
Dale

<html><div style='background-color:'><DIV>
<P>I really hope that someone will correct me if I am wrong about Jack Hill's record. But this is what I believe to be true about his record:</P>
<P>1) Voted for the nudity ordinance</P></DIV>
<P>2) Voted for the multimillion dollar gymasium.</P>
<DIV></DIV>
<P>3) Fought to make sure that "Sexual Orientation" was NOT included in Moscow's anti-discrimination laws.</P>
<DIV></DIV>
<P>I could be wrong about this. But this is what I have been told and seen him vote on at my visits to the City Council.</P>
<DIV></DIV>
<P>This may or may not be good news depending on your views of the issues. But if true it should be considered when voting.</P>

<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;As a reader and (not-frequent) poster to Vision 20/20, I'm afraid I'd be
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;inclined to agree with J. Hill's characterization of V20/20. It does
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;promote
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;polarization. It does give, new readers especially, a skewed view of our
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;community (refer to postings just this week)
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; The article connected with some thoughts I've been mulling over about
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Vision
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; 2020 in the last couple of days. I may well be one of the residents Jack
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; was scolding for intolerance and impoliteness; I've certainly posted some
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; sharp words. And that's okay with me. But I disagree that our listserv
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; "fuels" polarization.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; The polarization(s) pre-existed the listserv. People with mutually
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; incompatible worldviews, dozens of them, live in Moscow. Our peaceful
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; co-existence cannot depend on our local government, or on citizens
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; preserving a smiling failure to communicate.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; Vision 2020 focuses a certain element of our community--it's certainly not
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; representative of all of Moscow--and has fostered some conversations that
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; would probably not have happened otherwise. They haven't always been
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; pleasant conversations, but they have sometimes been useful, it seems to
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt;me.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; We also represent a lot of different discourse communities. Academics,
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; lawyers, theologians, and politicians spend their working lives arguing.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt;We
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; expect passionate dispute, and we generally enjoy it. Other discourse
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; communities experience that kind of conversation as painful,
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt;inappropriate,
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; or pointless. We have different ethical understandings of the value of
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; speaking up or remaining silent. And we have different degrees of
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; confidence in our own contributions--some of us (like me) may feel
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; over-empowered about sharing, while others hang back who could offer
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; something of value.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; I think our community needs more conversation, not less--and I don't think
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; we always need to smile.
