Howdy folks,
At the very least, Bill London's comments about Alturas are consistent.
As I read these types of posts, I get a higher regard for our legal
system that requires that facts be established and verified.
Bill London states "Taxpayers lost all the way around". I would like to
reiterate what I posted earlier this year. Since Alturas broke ground,
four new buildings have been built. Each one of these pay taxes both to
pay off the bond AND to the schools. The reality of the situation is
that the school bond would have been HIGHER if not for Alturas. Not only
does PacSim pay taxes to the schools, I also have three children in the
public schools here (as do others at PacSim) so that the school receives
additional state payment. Not to mention the property taxes paid by the
forty some employees that work in Alturas. And while I cannot speak for
the other companies here at Alturas, I promise that without Alturas,
PacSim would be elsewhere and taxes would be higher to fund the Moscow
schools.
Some might call this a subsidy - "Monetary assistance granted by a
government to a person or group in support of an enterprise regarded as
being in the public interest". But to me, this sounds like an investment
"Property or another possession acquired for future financial return or
benefit".
As for the day care - let's be up front on this. Will the primary
patrons be Alturas tenants? Certainly not at first. I have talked with
many PacSim employees and while they like the possibility this brings, I
don't see a mad rush to change day care facilities - this will happen
gradually over time. But I also know that PacSim will eventually derive
significant benefits from this service. For those who may be involved
with either side of the hiring process, being able to show job
applicants a day care center within 50 yards of their future place of
employment is a definite plus when trying to attract young
professionals. When the economy picks up and PacSim is hiring again,
this will aid in our ability to bring in the right people. This is also
true in trying to attract new businesses to Alturas as having a day care
in the park becomes another selling point.
I will be at the Thursday meeting to ask the City Council to grant the
permit.
