Sunil,
=20
Well, with the smoking, you're close on the personal responsibility =
area.
However, if someone didn't want to breathe second-hand smoke, they could
take their business elsewhere. There's no reason to legislate your =
morality
on people who do want to smoke over dinner (realize: I'm advocating this =
as
a non-smoker; I have no personal stake in that matter). The fact that
non-smoking restaurants have had to be legislated and not occurred by =
the
demand of us non-smokers should tell you something.=20
=20
Before I answer your question about the War on Drugs, answer me this: =
who is
to pickup the medical bills for all those people who do not follow the
warning labels on the tons of Ding Dongs being eaten? If the taxpayers =
are
going to pickup the medical bills (e.g., socialized medicine system), =
then
eating/drinking/smoking needs to be regulated by the State. However, if =
we
are free to pollute our bodies as we enjoy, then the taxpayer cannot be
responsible for paying for someone else's irresponsibility. Or?
=20
Best,
Dale

Okay, I'll play. I think warnings are appropriate for food items. If =
you're
going to profit from the public's willingness to eat crap, then I think =
you
should warn them that they're about to buy/eat crap. After that they're =
on
their own.
Smoking in restaurants: I think there's a sufficient public health =
interest
for non-smokers who suffer from second-hand smoke for the government to
legislate in this area. (I will say that I thought California was silly =
for
banning smoking in bars.) =20
Now your turn: what about our current drug policies? Is it time to =
give up
on the War on Drugs? Allow people to make their own decisions on what =
they
want to ingest/inject?
Sunil
