Mike,

Since you raised the topic of the city's pay plan, I thought I'd go off on a tangent on the same issue. When I read the proposed pay for the Assistant City Attorney, I was suprised to see that the city was proposing paying $45K a year. Now I agree that the position is underpaid at $31-32K, which according to the Daily News is what it's getting now. I just think that $45K is too much for what is essentially a first job for a new graduate; $38-40K sounds about right to me. Folks don't usually stay in this job very long; they get court experience and move on.

Will paying more attract someone good who will want to stay in the job? I guess it's possible, but I doubt it. Prosecuting traffic violations isn't particularly exciting work. How many times in a year do you want to see the same kid with the bad haircut and the lame excuses for why he was speeding?

Maybe I'm wrong. Does the Assistant City Attorney do more than prosecute misdemeanors brought by the police department? Any other attorneys want to chime in? If I'm correct and the city is going to be paying too much here, is this true for the other positions as well?
