Joan,

You are close.

If wasn't for golf being invented in Scotland, there would not have been
a reformation. St. Andrews along with George Wishart followed by John
Knox... Golf, theology, and then the 19th hole with dark beer!

Having played St. Andrews and then walking down the street to see where
the castle was taken and the mark on the street where Wishart was burned
at the stake for his reformation beliefs; I am certain that if it wasn't
for the Scottish inventing golf, we would all still be catholics or burned
at the stake as Wishart was for heresy. The reformation brought us tolerance;
golf brought us  the reformation; therefore, golf has brought us tolerance.
