[Mjhsteam] MJHS Response to Weekend Shooting

Dear Parents, 

As part of our school response, the following announcement was read to
the entire MJHS  student body:

Over the weekend, Moscow suffered a tragedy that has affected our whole
community.

 

It is with sadness that we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families
and friends of the people affected by the shooting that occurred near
the Latah County Courthouse and the Presbyterian Church in Moscow on
Saturday night.  

 

Three people lost their lives including a Moscow Police officer who was
attempting to protect our community while doing his job.  A Latah County
Sheriff's deputy and a community member were also injured during the
incident.

 

In addition to the families and friends most directly affected, some of
our students may be affected by this tragedy.  MJHS has always been
known for its support of others, especially in times of personal loss.  

 

Please be sensitive to the feelings of fellow students and your teachers
in the next few days.  If needed, our counselors and other staff are
available to talk with students in the office.  Please ask your teacher
for a pass to the office if you need someone to talk to.  

 

Weather permitting, our flag will be flying half-staff in honor of the
Moscow Police Officer who died in the line of duty.

 

 In addition, our teachers received the following message:

 

Teachers:  It is intended that our routine be as normal as possible
today.   A news conference will air at 11:00, but we do not feel the
need to show it to students.  Please take note of students who seem to
have been deeply impacted and notify the counselors of those
individuals.  Counselors will not be able to work with a large number of
students, but if you begin seeing a need for additional assistance,
please notify us so we can request the assistance of Crisis Team
members.
